Hiwassee Dam Elementary/Middle School is a small, community school nestled in the southwestern North Carolina mountains on picturesque Hwy 294. It is a school filled with highly dedicated and caring teachers who actively support their students and the learning process. HDEMS is made up of students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade. The student body consists of approximately 180 students with an average class size of 18-20 students.

Teachers and staff understand the importance of getting to know each student’s learning needs and making a personal connection with each young person who walks through our doors. Hiwassee Dam Elementary/Middle School is a place where relationships are essential to our students’ success. Our school-wide initiative is to promote rigorous instruction through research-based educational practices, hands-on learning, and advanced coursework. We believe that education is a balance between meeting the state curriculum standards, as outlined in the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and Common Core State Standards, and meeting the specific needs of each student.

Our goal is to help students connect new concepts to real-world examples and personal experiences, thus making learning meaningful and relevant to each and every individual student. Students have the opportunity to learn through exploration and discovery while striving for excellence in the classroom. The teachers and staff at Hiwassee Dam Elementary/Middle School focus on meeting the individual learning needs of their students by providing them with hands-on, interactive learning opportunities incorporated into daily instructional practices.
