About

Hiwassee Dam Elementary/Middle is Proud to be a Title I School nestled in the southwestern North Carolina mountains on picturesque Hwy 294.  It is a small community-based school filled with highly dedicated and caring teachers who actively support their students and the learning process. Hiwassee Dam Elementary/Middle School is made up of students in grades Kindergarten through 8th grade.  The student body consists of approximately 120 students with an average class size of 13 -15 students.  Teachers and staff understand the importance of getting to know each student’s learning needs and making a personal connection with each young person who walks through our doors as well as their families.  Hiwassee Dam Elementary/Middle School is a place where relationships are essential to our students’ success.

Our school-wide initiative is to promote rigorous instruction through research-based educational practices, hands-on learning, and advanced coursework in a blended classroom environment.  We believe that education is a balance between meeting the state curriculum standards, as outlined in the North Carolina Standard Course of Study, and meeting the specific needs of each student.  Our goal is to help students connect new concepts to real-world examples and personal experiences, thus making learning meaningful and relevant to each and every student. Students have the opportunity to learn through exploration and discovery, while striving for excellence in the classroom.  Students at all grade levels have access to technology resources. All students use ChromeBooks within their classrooms and as part of their daily studies in the classroom and at home. Middle School students also have the opportunity to receive high school credit through online coursework as well as explore High School CTE classes in Health Sciences and Family & Consumer Sciences. Our K-5 students will also participate in our Literacy and Visual Arts Program. The teachers and staff at Hiwassee Dam Elementary/Middle School are focused on meeting the individual learning needs of their students by providing them with challenging and interactive learning opportunities incorporated into daily instructional practices.  We understand that not all students learn the same way or at the same rate, therefore, we offer support to help those who need a little extra help.

We believe that knowledge is the key to opening doors, and we have high expectations for our students.  Our job is to provide our students with the highest quality of education and a knowledge-base that will promote success throughout their school years and into their future endeavors.  By knowing and nurturing our students, maintaining goals of excellence at all levels, and through thoughtful teaching and preparation, our students are able to grow and achieve success within their classrooms and on district and state assessments.   We hope to empower our students into becoming life-long learners by helping them take personal ownership of their education.
